Innovation Award

The Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation in Alternative Fuels for Transportation

The State of Israel considers the research and development of technologies that reduce the global use of oil in transportation an international concern and a top national priority. Thus, in 2011, the government of Israel, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, initiated the National Program to Reduce the Global Dependence on Oil, with an aim of encouraging global innovation and scientific breakthroughs in the field of alternative transportation fuels.

In order to promote the goals of this initiative, the Prime Minister’s Office together with the Ministry of Science and Technology and Keren Hayesod-UIA, granted in 2014, for the second time, “The Eric and Sheila Samson Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation in Alternative Fuels for Transportation”.

The 2014 award winners were Professor Michael Grätzel from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and Professor Thomas Meyer of the University of North Carolina in the U.S.

They will be awarded for their groundbreaking research in the development of effective and inexpensive solar cell-based methods for converting solar energy into electric energy used for electric propulsion in the field of transportation. These cells also serve to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, a critical stage in the development of solar based fuels for transportation.

The prestigious Prize was awarded to the two winners during the Fuel Choices Summit that took place on December 3rd and 4th 2014 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
